Canale d'Agordo - Dolomites

THE GARES VALLEY

The Gares Valley is a glacial valley stretching for about 7 km from the main village of Canale d’Agordo towards the Pale di San Martino range.

A popular destination for hikers and tourists staying in the Biois Valley, it offers countless opportunities for outdoor sports: from mountain biking to ski rolling, from Nordic walking to typical winter sports such as cross-country skiing and ice climbing.

At the end of the valley, closed by the Pale di San Martino range, the Comelle waterfalls and several mountain huts are easily visible and accessible.

Between 1450 and 1748, the mines of Sass Negher were located here, where copper and iron were mainly extracted. The name Forno di Canale was given to the village because of its importance as a mining and metallurgical center in the Agordino area.

Comelle waterfalls

The Gares Valley is also well known for the beautiful Comelle waterfalls, clearly visible from the Pian de Giare area.

There are two waterfalls, and they can be reached by following trail CAI no. 704, which starts near the Capanna Cima Comelle.

Biotope

In the Pian de Giare area (1381 m a.s.l.), visitors can walk near the Gares Pond. It appears with the snowmelt and lasts until the beginning of winter, offering ideal conditions for hydrophytic communities, amphibian breeding, and feeding opportunities for other species.
